  15.           BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) -- The anti-fur demonstrators
  16.           carried their cause right to the home of a department
  17.           store executive. And that offended his wife, Gina
  18.           Pickell, so much that she turned a garden hose on them
  19.           -- even following them out to the middle of the street.

  21.           ``Maybe I went too far, but everyone understands that I
  22.           was provoked,'' she said. ``If it happened again, my
  23.           reaction would be the same, maybe worse.''

  25.           The law appeared to be on the side of the protesters,
  26.           who pressed charges against Mrs. Pickell. Her first
  27.           trial on two counts of simple assault ended with a hung
  28.           jury March 20, and she faces a second trial in May. If
  29.           convicted, she would face a maximum of a $1,000 fine
  30.           and 90 days in jail on each count.

  32.           But in the arena of public opinion, Mrs. Pickell has
  33.           support. About 100 people rallied outside the courtroom
  34.           carrying placards -- ``Justice Fur Gina'' -- and garden
  35.           hoses. Many wore fur coats.

  37.           ``It was just lovely,'' Mrs. Pickell said. ``It gave me
  38.           the confidence I needed to go into that courtroom.''

  40.           Even the jury forewoman, who refused to give her name,
  41.           later expressed sympathy for the defendant: ``It makes
  42.           me want to go out and buy a fur coat and a hose.''

  44.           For her part, Mrs. Pickell says the issue is not
  45.           ideology. In fact, she says she doesn't wear fur.

  47.           ``I just disagree with their tactics. I think people
  48.           are getting kind of sick of this kind of thing,'' she
  49.           said. ``Harassing someone at their private home? That's
  50.           going too far.''

  52.           The demonstrators, from the group Vegan Frontline, say
  53.           they were within their rights in staging their protest
  54.           outside the Pickell home on Dec. 14.

  56.           ``We were standing on a public sidewalk,'' said Jessica
  57.           Peters, a 19-year-old college student and one of two
  58.           protesters who pressed charges.

  60.           ``She walked all the way to the middle of the street
  61.           and started blasting us on the street. We were dripping
  62.           wet in the middle of December,'' Peters said.

  64.           At issue in the Pickell case was the sale of
  65.           fur-trimmed coats at Bon Marche stores, owned by
  66.           Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores. Ira
  67.           Pickell is chairman of the Seattle-based chain.

  69.           ``Her husband's store was selling fur and he was
  70.           telling people that he wasn't,'' Peters says. ``We
  71.           wanted to make sure people knew that.''

  73.           Mrs. Pickell concedes some fur-trimmed coats were
  74.           available. But she says her husband was instrumental in
  75.           a decision to close fur departments in the stores.
